Module 8: Internet Issues

This module reviewed these topics:  Cyber-bullying, How to Prevent Cyber-bullying, Identity Theft, Loss of Reputation & General Internet Safety

The following list is taken from the Academy of Art's ARE615 Module 8, page 5.  I think these main points are important reminders for teachers, parents, and students to follow.  Most Internet issues can be avoided by using common sense and being respectful.  Many issues usually start in the home and parents need to be active and responsible participants in what their children are doing online.

  • Don't open files from strangers.
  • Protect personal information online and on cell phones.
  • Never meet anyone in person that you only know from online.
  • Don't email or text pictures of people without their permission.
  • Never send anyone revealing pictures of yourself.
  • Use passwords that contain upper- and lowercase letters and numbers.
  • Learn how to use a firewall to protect your computer.
  • Use up-to-date antivirus and anti-spamware software on your computer.
  • Understand social networking website privacy options.
  • Make sure your social network profile is set to private.
  • Don't accept requests or messages from people you don't know.
  • Be careful of links that ask you to post your social network information on an outside site. People who plan to steal your account and try to trick your friends out of money, etc. by using your name often create these types of websites.

Following basic Netiquette is the best plan of action, which will foster a professional platform on all social media and online platforms.

As a reminder I am sharing the basic items to THINK about before you post! As stated in this week's module, "escaping or overcoming a negative Internet reputation is a difficult task, so it is important for young people to learn how to prevent developing one. "

Module 7: I have started a Wiki page called Mobile Artistry. It is dedicated to mobile device users who are creating art while using digital apps

Here is the wiki for you to check out https://mobileartistry.wikispaces.com

A few samples of the recent posts are shared here

This post shares the digital app Laminar and some edits I created with this tool.

Here are a few more edits I did today - showing the before and after.  I used an editing tool called DistressedFX which allows adding layers of textures and objects/symbols into your image. In this photo, I thought it would look more dynamic if two black crows were circling above the mountain range.

Module 6: We were introduced to producing and utilizing digital media: Photography.

We learned the basic tools and navigation of a digital camera - F-Stops, Shutter Speeds, ISO, Cropping, Rule of Thirds., etc. There was a lot of information but it was all very clear and easy to understand.
With this assignment I decided to have fun and shoot one of my cats.  I later cropped this in Photoshop and then uploaded it on the iPhone.  I used a very inexpensive digital app called Shapely - adding a frame, text, object, and layer.  It can be purchased online via the Apple store.
I'm sharing the app blog, so you can see all of the fun edits!  http://shapely.tumblr.com
I was thinking this could be a fun assignment for students new to digital cameras and editing tools - they can shoot a photo of their pet or favorite toy or object.  They can edit the image using a cropping tool (Photoshop, iPhoto) then add two or more elements into the photo: boarder, object, text, &/or texture layer.
